Beans are a hit!

Well, this weekend has been great. I went on a women's retreat at my church and really had a great time with the Lord. I missed my little guy, but he did just fine without me. Today, he waved hi at Daddy shoveling the snow outside (welcome to Michigan!) and came down the stairs on his behind all by himself (I taught him that.) We fed him beans for dinner, which he loves. His face looks like he has measles, but be assured, it's just food. :) Right after dinner we went straight to the bathtub, and as you can see, he is now nice and clean all over again.

Our Little Explorer

It's been awhile since I've posted, sorry. This is a picture of Jackson playing with Emma's Valentine box--he gets a kick out of putting his hand in the opening and pulling out a surprise. It entertained him for quite awhile! He also has been playing with his bead blocks and is getting really good at putting the lid ever so carefully on top. It's pretty amazing, actually. He's been sick with a cold, but he's feeling a little better every day. This morning, I fed him egg yolk, toast, and bananas, and he did pretty well. Three-quarters of it ended up on the floor, but hey, it's a start! Today, we're going to Toys'R'Us to pick out his birthday presents, yay! He's almost a year, I can't believe it. More later...

The temperature is rising...

Well, yesterday lifted all of our spirits--the temperature got up to 58 degrees, and we felt like it was summer! Or at least spring. JW, me, and J took the BOB stroller out for its first run, and we had a blast. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the BOB fund, it was totally worth it.

Jackson also had a rise in temperature--he has a fever so has been feeling less than his best. He's still a trooper--he tries to play and read his books, but he would rather just be held. Hopefully he will start feeling better soon.

To some more warmer days--or at least above freezing will do...

Perchville, USA

Yesterday, we made our first trip to Tawas, MI to visit Aunt Sally and Uncle Ed and the cousins for the annual festival of Perchville. We started the afternoon with the "Chilly Cook Off," which was really fun, though it wasn't so chilly yesterday, reaching over 50 degrees! We didn't give any chili to J, though, because I remembered the scene from "Mr. Mom." After we got home, JW took Jackson sledding, and he had a great time! Granted, he only went down the hill once, but that was enough. He got a kick out of JW's wolf hat he borrowed from Uncle Ed; he was giggling! And another milestone, he waved "bye-bye" all by himself for the first time! It was adorable!

Check out the silly video of Jackson sledding:

Mischief Maker

Today, Jackson managed to pull over this very tall lamp in our living room with a fairly large base, shattering the lampshade all over the place. Thankfully, he didn't get hurt, JW cleaned up nicely, and J was back to mischief making...

For some reason, he loves this little orange spongy ball, and lately he's been sticking it into his mouth and letting go with his hands. It's really funny, and it reminds me of a little puppy dog...

Even though I've cleared everything off the lower shelves, J still wants to reach the wooden picture frame holding a photo of his little face, and the silver plate that spells out "Jesus." After he pulled down the picture frame today, he walked over to his basketball hoop and threw it through the hoop--score!

He likes to play "peek-a-boo" with the curtains...

Can you see him?

Dance with Elmo!

"The only thing that seems eternal and natural in motherhood is ambivalence."--Jane Lazarre

Yesterday morning my eyes were droopy with sleep, as little J decided sleep wasn't what he had in mind overnight. I wasn't too happy to be his mom. But as the day wore on, and included a yummy 2 hour nap for me, I felt much better and couldn't imagine being anywhere other than right here. J was so funny yesterday; I turned on his Elmo Live doll (who needed a battery replacement and whose one arm is now broken from J's rough play), and pressed his tummy, at which point Elmo starts to sing, "Dance with Elmo" along to a funky beat. J started to do his bouncy dance, and I could have sworn he said, "Dance," or at least something that sounds like that. It was super cute. And then this morning I awoke at 4am for the first time, and then he slept again until 7:30am, so I feel bright-eyed and bushy-tailed today. It's funny what a few hours of sleep can do for you...

Steeler Nation!

Today, I managed to give Jackson his first bath in probably about 3 weeks. Oh well, I know there will be a day when he will be so dirty that he will need multiple baths a day, so I shouldn't worry, right? He enjoyed his bath more than ever tonight, I think because we have been going to swim class at the YMCA. He practically dove into the tub while I was running the water so he could splash. Then he cried when he had to get out. It was very cute.

The Steelers won last night, and we were all very excited, even Jackson, as you can see from his picture. In reality, he was far more interested in trying to turn off the TV than he was in watching it.
Dinner was a success tonight; we had Chicken with Southwestern Salsa from Cooking Light, which you can try at: http://find.myrecipes.com/recipes/recipefinder.dyn?action=displayRecipe&recipe_id=1867561

First Entry

I was inspired to create this blog by my good friend Meg, another fellow "mommy on call," who created a blog as well. I have a baby blog, as most of you know, for posting pics of baby Jackson, but I thought it would be fun, therapeutic, and just a good idea to make a blog for me, to record my thoughts and perceptions on what goes on in my life. I will continue to update Jackson's baby blog, of course, thru his first year. This blog will be more of a place where I can record the "jackson'isms" of the day, touching patient encounters, or just random thoughts from my head. I decided to call this blog "Mommy on Call" because not only am I a mommy and a doctor, but once you're a mommy, you are literally always "on call." Plus, you feel "post-call" nearly every day as long as baby is not sleeping all the way thru the night yet.

Today I am working Express Care, but it's pretty laid back, allowing me to do things like create a blog! I've been brainstorming ideas for J's first birthday party and seeing some patients as well. JW brought J to see me after church, so I got to feed him and snuggle him a bit. He's wearing his Steeler outfit today to support our team. GO STEELERS! (It's Superbowl Sunday today).
